The conference is jointly sponsored every fall by the teacher professional organizations for mathematics, science, language arts and social studies. Click here for registration information. The ACTM Luncheon speaker will be Oscar Chavez, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education at the University of Missouri. He will talk about what he has learned through his research about the influence of textbooks on the teaching of mathematics. There will be two mathematics short courses offered this year. Thursday 8:00-11:20 K-12 Big Ideas for Mathematics $105 Full Title "New Directions for Teaching, Learning, and Assessing Mathematics" Description "This session will be in two parts. Part 1 will illustrate how to extend content standards to drive teaching, learning, and assessment by "essential understandings and big ideas" in mathematics. Part 2 will share lessons learned about teaching problem solving from the speaker's 30+ years of research, teaching, and curriculum development." Charles Professor Emeritus Department of Mathematics San Jose State University San Jose, CA Friday 8:00-11:20 Developing Proportional Reasoning in Grades 4-8 ($50) This workshop will focus on developing student understanding of fractions, ratios and rational numbers by deepening the teacher’s understanding of rational numbers and by accessing the latest research on how students learn fraction, ratio, and percent.
